VIU clinches the top spot in the conference with a 5-0 win over Langara
NANAIMO - The Mariners clinched top spot in the PACWEST conference with a week to go in the regular season with a 5-0 home win over Langara College.
Fifth-year midfielder Courtney Ingram put the exclamation point on the victory in her final home game. Late into injury time, she one-touched a screamer of a shot over the head of the Falcons goalkeeper to complete the scoring. Jada Kamerman scored two goals, including one on a penalty kick, while Hannah Wagner and Emma Thornton added singles. Ingram was named VIU's Country Club Dairy Queen Player of the Game.
The Mariners had their way with the Falcons this season. VIU was 3-0 in their matchups with the Falcons coming into the game and had outscored Langara 8-0. With the opportunity to clinch the top seed in the conference on the line, the Mariners kept their foot on the gas throughout and held the Falcons to three first-half shots (two on target).
Mariners goalkeeper Kaiden Thorpe kept her season-long clean sheet intact and hasn't allowed a goal in seven appearances this season.
By clinching the top spot in the conference, the Mariners earn a bye to the gold medal game at the PACWEST Soccer Championships, Sunday, October 26 at Capilano University's Squamish campus. VIU will play the winner of the #2 vs. #3 semifinal that takes place a day earlier.
Thank You, Grads
After the game, the team's graduating seniors were recognized (L-R): Hannah Wagner, Mya Creed, Courtney Ingram, and Erin Jensen.
